Colorado’s future auto technicians test their skills

Denver, May 14— Employment of automotive service technicians and mechanics will increase by 14 percent between 2006 and 2016, compared with 10 percent for all other occupations. This is according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS also estimates that an additional 110,000 new automotive technician jobs will be added over the decade. What group of people will fill the projected increased need for automotive technicians? How has the skill of auto repair changed, and how are students trained to fix cars of the future? The answer to these questions will be on display this Saturday in Denver.

The annual Ford/AAA AutoSkills challenge is this Saturday, May 17 at the Napa Distribution Center in Denver. Ten teams of high school auto technician students from across Colorado will compete to fix “bugged” cars in the fastest time in order to win the state championship and college scholarships. The state championship school receives an invitation to compete in the national finals in Dearborn, Michigan on June 24, where more than six million dollars in college scholarships and prizes will be up for grabs. The details are below:

WHO: Ten teams of Colorado high school students competing to win auto-technical college scholarships. Teams include high school students from Aurora, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, Lakewood, Rifle, Salida and Sterling.

WHERE: Napa Distribution Center, 2101 Hwy 224 Denver, Colorado
