The Dos and Don'ts of Renting a Car

Car Rental

Summertime is vacation time, and if your travel plans include renting a car, here are a few things to know before you go.

Make a reservation as far in advance as possible. As availability decreases, rates may increase and prices can change from minute to minute. Have your confirmation number with you at check-in. Choose the right vehicle. Consider the number of people, amount of luggage and gear you're carrying, and the number of days you need the car.

Ask about cancellation rules. Some companies charge a cancellation fee if you have used a credit card to guarantee the reservation, especially for special vehicles such as minivans or convertibles.

Follow the guidelines of your reservation (number of rental days, drop-off location, and time of return). If your plans change, contact the car-rental company promptly. Also, determine whether you will be charged for a partial or full day if you return the car late, or if you will be charged the full rental time if you return the car early.

Check your insurance coverage. Check your personal auto insurance policy to make sure you are covered when renting a car, or check for coverage provided with your credit card. These coverages can make accepting the loss-damage waiver unnecessary.

Don't accept the fuel-purchase option. A refund is not given on gasoline not used so fill the tank before turning in the car and obtain a receipt for the fuel. Also, check the gas gauge before leaving the rental lot to ensure the tank is full.

Check the car carefully for body damage, scratches, and other cosmetic defects. Have the attendant record damage information on the rental agreement before you leave the lot.

Check your driving record. Some car-rental companies perform driving record verification on renters and additional drivers at the time of rental. To check your record ahead of time, call TravelCheckTM at (800) 388-9099. The TravelCheck fee for AAA members is $7.95 (a $2 savings).

Read the agreement. Read the items you are asked to initial on the rental agreement to ensure they are accurate.

Remember your member savings. With a rental from Hertz, AAA's exclusive car rental partner, AAA members receive up to a 20 percent discount on car rentals, plus many exclusive benefit and special promotional offers. For reservations and information, contact your local AAA Travel office, visit AAA.com/hertz, or call the Hertz-AAA Desk at (800) 654-3080.
