Gold Mine Tours in Colorado

Argo Mine

"Pike's Peak or Bust" That rallying cry brought over 50,000 fortune seekers to Colorado during the1800's. The initial gold discovery in Colorado was at the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek, some 60 miles north of Pike's Peak. But, it was Pike's Peak that served as a beacon for miners and adventurers as they crossed the eastern plains.

Once word got out about the Colorado gold strike, towns sprung up along the gulches of the western and southern mountains. Discoveries made while "panning" for gold led miners to seek upstream for the ore's source, rich lode deposits of gold that often required hard rock mining to extract.

Today, families can tour many of these early gold (and silver) mines and get a sense of what Colorado was like in the days of "Pike's Peak or Bust". Many of the mine tours also offer the opportunity to try your own luck at panning for gold. Bring a light jacket since it can be cool inside mine tunnels. Also, don't be a "claim jumper". Most mining claims throughout Colorado have been active since the turn of the 20th century. Taking a pan and heading to the local creek is highly discouraged. It would be a shame to find out that your new found fortune belonged to someone else.

It seemed that the riches from the Matchless Mine would last forever. However, the drop in silver prices along with poor investments and the repeal of the Sherman Silver Act of 1893 claimed Tabor's $9 million fortune. Baby Doe held onto the Matchless for 36 years and was found frozen to death, penniless and alone. This surface tour includes the mine's hoist house and the cabin where Baby Doe was found.
