Get more from your visit to Mesa Verde National Park by staying inside the park at Far View Lodge, a peaceful retreat perched on a high shoulder of the mesa. With minimal distractions, it's quiet enough to hear the hawks fly by. You’ll enjoy beautiful vistas reaching into three states, convenient access to guided tours and wonderful range of casual to fine dining choices.

Mesa Verde National Parks is open all year but on a limited basis in winter. Interpretive activities are held through the year (weather permitting). The Far View Lodge and the Chapin Mesa Museum, with exhibits, tour information is open daily to mid-October.

The park consists of nearly 5,000 archaeological sites, which include 600 cliff dwellings. Mesa Verde, Spanish for "green table," is so called because of its comparatively level top, forested with juniper and pinyon trees. It encompasses 80 square miles, rises 1,800 to 2,000 feet above the valley along the north side and slopes gradually down to the cliffs border the Mancos River Canyon on the south.

A score of large canyons seam the mesa, and in the shelter of the hundreds of alcoves eroded in the cliffs are some of the world's largest and best preserved cliff dwellings. Archaeologists have stabilized only a few of the sites; asphalt roads lead to over-looks above the main ones.

When entering the park, visitors must purchase a $10-$15 entrance permit, good for seven consecutive days, per family-style vehicle or RV. Golden Age passes may be purchased and Golden Access passes may be obtained at the park entrance gate.
